Memory Exercises While Providing Care For Seniors

Apr 28, 2017 by Samantha Pfeifer

If you are helping provide care for seniors then one of the best things that you can do to help improve their overall mental health and wellbeing is to assist them in doing different memory exercises. Just like muscles, the brain can atrophy if it isn’t used enough. This is why it is so important that seniors are exercising their brains so they can continue to work as they are designed to.

When providing care for seniors here are some of the different memory exercises that you can do to improve their brain, their memory and their overall quality of life.

  • Make lists such as grocery lists and encourage your loved one to try to memorize them.
  • Play memory card games for short-term brain exercises.
  • Challenge seniors to do basic math in their head without a calculator or pen and pencil.
  • Make old recipes with your loved one and see if they can remember how to prepare their favorite dishes.
  • Help your loved one learn something new to challenge the brain.
  • Have your loved one sing or listen to music or even teach them the words to a new song.
  • Encourage seniors to learn a new hobby that stimulates both their brain and their muscles such as yoga or golf.
  • Have seniors work on their hand-eye coordination with hobbies like knitting.
  • Teach seniors words in a new language to stimulate different areas of their brain that may not be used normally.
  • When your senior is eating encourage them to recall the tastes of different flavors or spices.

Keep these important exercises in mind if you are providing care for seniors. It can make all of the difference in the world when it comes to your loved one’s quality of life and ability to continue to life the best life possible while under care.
