In Her Own Words: Angie W., Caregiver

Background

Always being aware of others needing assistance, or a helping hand with their lives, I’ve been a volunteer with Special Olympics since 1993. Being a Head Coach and Manager is a tremendous responsibility with a year around commitment to those I serve.

The work necessary to ensure competition participation and inclusion with peers from surrounding teams and those at a state level is a small amount of my soul and time in comparison to the joy and satisfaction I can provide to this section of our community. Activity in sporting practices and competitions are great for team building, peer cooperation and super exercise!

With this experience, I’ve recently joined an advisory council that brings the knowledge from the athlete level to state managers, to make experiences and encounters for those with special needs even better as this organization expands for the future!

I’ve worked for Comfort Keepers since 2008.

Day In The Life Of A Caregiver

As a caregiver for Comfort Keepers, I had the pleasure of caring for a delightful gentleman named Wally. A retired Army officer, he would regale me with stories of his wartime experiences. But because he suffered from Alzheimer’s,his wife asked me to discuss current events as frequently as possible to keep his memory sharp.

We would often watch newscasts as we enjoyed our lunch. One day, a news anchor said they would discuss a surge in Minnesota’s population the year before when they returned from commercial break.

I was curious what could cause such a surge the previous year. With an inquisitive look and a raised eyebrow, Wally turned to me and said, “People were having more sex!”

Editor’s note: Angie has worked for Comfort Keepers since 2008. She is currently the Payroll and Billing Administrator
